The key feature of our Civil Engineering programmes
The key feature of our Civil Engineering programmes is variety. You will find the hands-on approach we
emphasise in laboratory work, computer applications and fieldwork both stimulating and demanding. On a
typical morning you might be testing steel to destruction, and in the afternoon using sophisticated electronic
surveying equipment to set out the line of a new road. Your study programme will involve you using specialist
design software, state-of-the-art project management software and spread-sheet applications to resolve a
range of civil engineering design and construction problems.
The four year degree programme is the BSc(Hons) in Civil Engineering and this is shadowed by a two year
Diploma in Higher Education (DipHE) in Civil Engineering Studies programme which on successful completion
permits direct entry into stage three of the degree programme.
The practical studies that are an essential feature of our Civil Engineering courses are supported by our well
equipped laboratories and workshops with the use of modern land surveying instruments, testing equipment
and IT facilities featuring strongly in the programmes. We have close links with the research and consultancy
work carried out at the University and in particular with the Urban Water Technology Centre (UWTC), an
internationally recognised centre of engineering excellence within the University of Abertay Dundee. These links
help to ensure that your study programme is current and relevant.
